The Music Asylum Talks To…Ross from Hakusho Demon

Can you tell us about the origin of the band name, a history of the band and a little bit about the various members?

So Hakusho Demon started as my musical outlet as I loved the anime series Yu Yu Hakusho growing up and I wanted an alias of a character who was apart of that world. There are many demons who are good or bad in Yu Yu Hakusho and so the band name is used as an character. Also Hakusho in Japanese means “white paper” and so the band name would be “white paper demon” aswell. The band started back in 2017 as a way to express myself through writing. Currently the members are Brian for bass and Matteo for drums with myself (ross) with vocals/guitar. Brian and Matteo play in the band Superbloom in NYC and I hired them at their studio to help make songs with me last year.

Are you all from the same area? How did you get together as a band?

I first met Brian after emailing a studio which produced one of my favorite bands growing up called Transit. Jesse Cannon emailed me back and introduced me to Brian who worked at his studio. Since then I’ve recorded a few albums with them. We all live in different areas so I would visit NYC to record music over the years.

Who are your favourite artists/bands and how have they influenced your own sound?

My favorite bands would be My Chemical Romance, The Foo Fighters, and Girugamesh.

Did you always have the ambition to be a musician and in a band or did you originally have other plans?

Yes I always wanted to be a musician and put out songs. For sure a dream that I’ve always had.

What songs or albums are on your current playlist?

Some songs that have been in my playlist are “Crying Rain” by Girugamesh, “Everlong” by The Foo Fighters, and “The joke isn’t funny when ur the punchline” by DethTech.

Do you sing in the shower?

Normally I prefer singing in my car or when I know no one is listening.

Do you have any plans for the band for this year and into next year?

Current plans are to keep releasing music and the band just put out a new song on YouTube called “Aura”.

Do you currently have any new songs/albums ready to be released?

Besides “Aura” being released there are more tracks recorded that will be getting vocals added towards them. There is also a rough demo that has gotten good feedback but it needs to be re-recorded in a better environment before being released again.

If you could play at any venue in the world where would you choose?

Royal Albert Hall

Do you have a favourite album? If so, what is it?

I would probably say “The Black Parade” by MCR since it’s such an emotionally charged and catchy album made in the singers late twenties/early thirties. It Definitely Gives me hope that I could make an album that great before I turn 30.

Do you have any guilty pleasure songs/albums?

I like a lot of Machine Gun Kelly’s newer songs and Sleeping with Sirens. Also the songs from bands like Evanescence and Flyleaf too. Oh and some Nickleback songs like the song “Far Away”

If you were putting together the greatest show on earth, who would be playing?

MCR, MGK, Flyleaf, The Foo Fighters, Papa Roach, Ed Sheehan, Oasis

Can you remember the first album you bought with your own money? What was it and do you still have it?

I think I bought a Nirvana’s album “Nevermind” on iTunes or maybe The Fray’s second album called “The Fray” and then later I got a vinyl record of Deafhavens’ “New Bermuda”
